iA Writer - Write with Focus

I just recently got back into blogging. Before, I would lean on the WYSIWYG’s or TinyMCE’s that blogging platforms like Wordpress and Tumblr provide. Occasionally, if I wanted to be overwhelmed, I would write in Microsoft Word for its editing features.

Then I had an epiphany. Writing is distracting. As you write, you are thinking; as you are thinking, you have things happening around you that can ultimately make you lose your train of focus.

This is where iA Writer comes in. Created/developed by the guys over at Information Architects, iA Writer’s premise is simple: bolster distraction free writing by removing the fluff of conventional writing tools. iA Writer out of the box is a plain text editor with very few visual bells and whistles. It helps you to focus on your one priority: writing.

iA Writer does this exceptionally well. It’s touted feature is Focus Mode, which fades out all lines of the body besides the line you are currently writing. It also features the quick and easy Markdown, a plain text formatting syntax, which makes for quick inline editing that is exportable to HTML.

They are set to release an iOS version of the app - I could see this being very beneficial if they build in Dropbox support (it already supports iCloud, so that could be used as well on iOS5 devices).

For writers looking for a tool that will help boost their productivity, iA Writer provides an exceptional alternative option to everyday word programs.

Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol

I was able to see this movie last night, and I must say - it was pretty awesome. Tom Cruise looks old, but like other badass actors (Bruce Willis, Denzel Washington, Daniel Craig, Liam Neeson) he is getting better with age.

Some might say this movie is a paid advertisement for the city of Dubai and the new eco-friendly BMW i-Series, but outside of the obviously apparent ad placements, the movie kept you on your seat, was full of action, and set itself up for MI:5 (maybe).

Highly recommended.

Reviews

I use A LOT of gadgets. I read A LOT of blogs, news sources, etc. I like to think I am very well caught up in the tech world and want to share my point of view and opinions with you.

Starting today, and moving forward, I will be doing a review on apps, gadgets, sources, and other tech-related items that I use daily and love, and those that you should avoid.

First up today was my brief thought on Spotify.

Spotify Desktop Updates with Apps, Improved UI, and Better Overall Experience.

Over the last day, Spotify has been rolling out Spotify v0.8.0. From the Spotify blog:

To recap, the great new features we’ve packed into this release include:

  • Spotify Apps: includes the first apps from Rolling Stone, Last.fm, Songkick, The Guardian, TuneWiki, Soundrop, Pitchfork, Fuse, We Are Hunted, Billboard Top Charts, Moodagent, Top10, Tunigo (Sweden) and Dagbladet (Norway). More to come!
  • Spotify Radio
  • Updated ‘What’s New’ page
  • Predictive search results
  • Playlist search
  • New “Buddy List”
  • Add to Favourites
  • Full-screen support for OS X Lion

I love this new advancement in what I already considered a near-flawless service. This is one of the very few services (outside of Hulu Plus) that I am willing to pay a monthly subscription. At $9.99, I have unlimited music at the palm of my hands (available offline) and a music recommendation service that has given me hours of new music to enjoy and discover (coupled with using Turntable.fm, plenty of new music all the time).

With v0.8.0, Spotify really begins to show why it has the ability to take on iTunes and other cloud-based music services such as Google and Amazon as the go-to music service.

I am really excited for the future of Spotify.
